Microsoft 365, formerly Office 365, allows you to create multiple aliases with a single paid account. After the alias account is created within the admin centre, you can start receiving emails using the alias account. The emails will land in the inbox of your primary account. However, if you reply the emails, the person who received your it will see that it was sent from your primary account.
It is possible to send email using the alias account. The process is simple and it requires you to create an IMAP/POP account manually. In this article, I will explain how you can set up an alias account on Outlook. Not all email apps allow you to do this. You will need to choose apps that support both email address and username login.
To start off, make sure you already have an alias email account tagged to your primary Microsoft 365 account. If you do not have, you could follow the procedures below to create one.
Setting up an alias account
- In Microsoft 365 admin centre, go to Users > Active users
- Select the account that you want to create the alias account with. Click Manage username and email. From here, you could add additional aliases.
Setting up the alias account in Outlook
With the alias account set up, you could now add it to your email app. This process is similar across different email apps, including Outlook, Apple Mail or other email apps in your smartphone.
- In Outlook preferences, select Accounts.
- Select Add new account.
- Enter the email of the alias account and Continue.
- While Outlook is searching for a valid provider, click Choose the Provider.
- Select IMAP/POP.
- In the credentials panel, make sure that the primary email account (the account that you signed up with Microsoft 365) is entered in the Username. The Password should also be the primary account password.
- Enter smtp.office365.com for both Incoming Server and Outgoing Server and click Add Account.
Sending email from alias
After you have created your alias email account, any emails that were sent from this account will reflect as being sent from the alias. It is also useful to note that any emails that you received in the alias account will also be received in the primary account.
